The Nigerian federal government's Operation Safe Corridor (OPSC) program has successfully de-radicalized, rehabilitated, and reintegrated 117 former terrorists in Borno State. The OPSC coordinator announced the completion of the program during a stakeholders' meeting, highlighting the progress made in federal-state collaboration and the program's multi-agency approach.
No fewer than 117 repentant terrorists have completed the federal government’s de-radicalisation, rehabilitation and reintegration programme under operation safe corridor , in Borno state.on Thursday, Samaila Uba, director of defence information, said Y.
Ali, the OPSC coordinator, announced the development during a high-level stakeholders’ meeting held by the defence headquarters in collaboration with the OPSC leadership at the Nigerian Army Resource Centre, Abuja. According to the statement, Ali said the repentant terrorists underwent the DRR process at Mallam Sidi Camp, noting that the development reflects strengthened federal-state harmonisation in reception, monitoring and community reintegration. He said the meeting was held to finalise modalities for the transfer of the rehabilitated terrorists to their respective national and state authorities for reintegration.Ali expressed appreciation to Olufemi Oluyede, the chief of defence staff , for his leadership and institutional support, noting that the progress and expansion of OPSC are firmly anchored on the CDS philosophy of enhanced cooperation, improved welfare and sound administration under a whole-of-government framework. He added that OPSC is a multi-agency humanitarian stabilisation programme backed by the constitution of Nigeria and relevant international humanitarian and human rights instruments, drawing personnel from 17 services, ministries, departments and agencies. Since inception, he said, the programme has continued to evolve institutionally by strengthening screening mechanisms, refining ideological disengagement modules, improving psychosocial recovery systems and expanding inter-agency coordination. He emphasised that OPSC remains structured and integrity-protected, with emphasis on accountability, behavioural change and sustainable reintegration outcomes. He also highlighted the expansion of OPSC to the north-west, where a DRR camp established in February last year marked a significant stabilisation milestone. He said there is an ongoing engagement with the Zamfara state government to recalibrate the facility towards a comprehensive victim healing, rehabilitation and reintegration framework, integrating psychosocial recovery, community reconciliation, livelihood support and structured monitoring. Ali noted that Benue state has formally requested the establishment of a DRR camp, adding that the DHQ has assessed proposed sites and advised alignment with national infrastructure, security and sustainability standards before approval.Outlining the objectives of the stakeholders’ meeting, he said deliberations were expected to clarify roles of state authorities and MDAs, identify structured resettlement support frameworks, determine modalities for community sensitisation and camp visitation, and ratify graduation timelines for rehabilitated clients. Delivering the keynote address, Oluyede who was represented by Jamal Abdusalam, chief of defence operations at the DHQ, reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to a whole-of-government and whole-of-society approach to peace-building and national recovery. The CDS described OPSC as a critical pillar of Nigeria’s security architecture, noting that while kinetic operations create space for stabilisation, structured rehabilitation and reintegration consolidate those gains and prevent the recycling of violence. “Since its inception in 2016, Operation Safe Corridor has processed thousands of clients through a controlled and integrity-driven Disarmament, Rehabilitation and Reintegration framework,” the CDS said.“When properly screened and coordinated, surrender pathways degrade insurgent cohesion, generate actionable intelligence and support long-term stability.” The engagement witnessed updates on de-radicalisation, rehabilitation and reintegration camp activities, briefs by participants, presentation of souvenirs and group photographs.
